A creative journey to becoming something more than myself.

Ever since I was a kid, Iā€™ve been obsessed with rainbows, light, lasers, and shiny holographic things. When I was 14 or so, I asked my parents if they would help me raise money to buy a $13,000 laser projector. The same kind you see at raves and music festivals. The kind you need a permit for.

When asked what I would do with such an unusual (and expensive) purchase, I imagined setting it up in the backyard, turning it on, and just looking at itā€Šā€”ā€Ševery night. I imagined sitting out in the grass by myself, looking up at the rainbow laser light, and justā€¦being happy.

You can see how that translated into my adult life. Take a look at my room ā€” itā€™s practically neon. Rainbow light everywhere. My friends often joke that my living space looks like a night club, but truthfully, I enjoy that. Life is stressful. Light, color, and music make me feel good ā€” better than Iā€™ve ever felt, in fact.

Getting There

Color reminds me that perception is just a position on a beautiful, infinite spectrum of possibilities. Just as hues shift, so too do things in life change, and I love that. I welcome it. I want to be different every day, and create wherever my imagination takes me.

I want to make magic for a livingā€”to live every moment creating something from nothing. I want to breathe life into still frames, to break boundaries, and to do the unimaginable. I want to make people smile and bring all of my ideas to life, not just some of them.

Iā€™ve always known this, but Iā€™m just now realizing how to get there.

Finally ā€” at 4am ā€” a real breakthrough.

I took a look around at all of my projectsā€¦all of my stuffā€¦the summation of all that I am, and all of the things I choose to surround myself with.

Amidst the overwhelming and perpetual feeling of chaos that comes with having a creative mindā€Šā€”ā€ŠI realizedā€¦this is who I am, and I donā€™t want to be anything else. I want my life to be filled with color, light, and wonder.

Whether Iā€™m watching Simply Nailogical review holographic nail polish, or watching Katie Carson create glitter-filled soapā€¦

ā€¦the stuff on my desk, the lights in my room, the people I follow on social media, all of these things inspire me. These are things I enjoy, and more importantly, these are the things that make me who I am.

Chasing Wonder

All around me are people who are following their dreams. They are living themā€”or at least they seem to beā€”but what is my dream? My dream is doing all of these things. Ever since I can remember, Iā€™ve been captivated by every form of creation that was intended to spark joy and wonder.

My dream is chasing that wonder. I create whenever I feel inspired, and I donā€™t limit myself by what I imagine to be possible. The downside is this usually results in starting projects faster than I can finish them.

My Twitch channel that I set up and ran for all of a few weeksā€¦

Iā€™m sure Steve Jobs would tell me that I need to ā€˜find focusā€™ and that I should pick just one project out of my many ideas, and just do THAT. But how could I ever choose? And how boring to do only one thingā€¦I see people like Elon Musk (probably my most influential role model) creating and managing several large ventures successfully. I know itā€™s possible.

The truth is, weā€™re often faced with an illusion of limitation. Iā€™m here to tell you, you donā€™t have to choose one thing or the other. You can do both. You can do all of them. You can do anything.

You are not limited by your surroundings. Your imagination has no limit, and so neither should your choices. You can make them possible.

āœØ You can do anything, if you believe you can. āœØ

This is why I love magic so much.

Your ability to take a set of ordinary things, and put them together in an extraordinary way is the essence of magic.

Your ideas and the way you bring them to life is worlds more than just smoke and mirrors.

I want to spread delight and wonder, and not be limited by my medium, by what I know at the time, or by what is ā€œrequired.ā€ Whether physical, digital, 2D, 3D, hardware, software ā€” I want the freedom to create in whatever way inspires me most at any given time. If I donā€™t yet know how, I can learn.

In 2014, after a series of hackathons, my friends and I founded an ā€˜imagineeringā€™ company called Rocket Department. Our startup allowed us to build anything we could dream of.

Over 6 years, we created countless wonders and we were having the time of our life. We made a FitBit for cats, an app-controlled cereal machine, a computer-automated laser maze, 9-foot tall kinetic light puzzles, and a whole lot more. The possibilities were endless, and between the five of us, we had the power to build anythingā€Šā€”ā€Šand so we did.

In 2018, my dear friend Emilie and I founded SuperRGB ā€” with the same desire for creative freedom. We wanted to be creative every day, and not be limited by things like product specs, client budgets, or project deadlines. And for over a year, we sat together in our rainbow studio, creating the most colorful, drool-worthy things we could imagine. That was the dream.

It all comes together.

After years of building ideas, and after collaborative formations with my friends came and went ā€” a feeling persisted that I couldnā€™t shake. Everything I did, every new project I started, felt like a misfit without a home.

My infinite endeavors and random curiositiesā€Šā€”ā€Šof which there are too many to nameā€Šā€”ā€Šwere scattered. I was the only thing uniting them, but every project felt so much bigger than myself. I wanted something to unify them.

I always knew I wanted a Super version of my RGB lifestyle, but Iā€™m just now realizing that itā€™s always beenā€”Magicle.

One entity to call my ownā€Šā€”ā€Ša place to create without limitation. A name filled with infinite possibilities. A parent for all of my projects. A mystical, limitless container I can carry with me wherever I go to hold all of my ideas.

And so finallyā€Šā€”ā€Šit all comes together. After years of stumbling in the dark, overcoming a myriad of failures, countless late nights, and hundreds of personal projects, the many become one. A place where I can bring all of my best ideas to life, and bring them together. A capsule for all of the colors in my spectrum.

And with that, I went to sleep with a smile on my face.

Now, and forever more. šŸŒˆāœØ
